Company A
John C Higgins
- Sergeant
He served in the fifth and Thirty-fifth regiments of the NewJersey Volunteers in the Civil War. He attained the rank of Sgt, of Co. A of each of the two regiments.Wounded during the battle of Fair Oaks, VA, May 31-June 1, 1862. 5 NJCo A (Fair Oaks, VA) May 31, 1862 (gunshot in left thigh according tohttp://www.apgarfamily.com/civil.htm. It later goes on to say, '35 NJCoA (Marietta, GA) August 4, 1864 (injured by artillery shell)'. We canonly wonder if he was in a different unit by 1864 which was common. However it says also that 'Discharged for disability: John C. Higgins#5 NJ CoA November 18, 1862' May we assume then that he re-enlisted?'

Annanias Hezekiah Lynn
- Private
Hello, I am a fourth generation granddaughter of Annanias H. Lynn. If you have any information regarding him, please feel free to email me. Here is some important information relating to Annanias. He was mustered in on August 22, 1861, in Trenton, New Jersey. Military records are inconsistent in the spelling of his name. Variations of his name in military documents include: Annanias, Ananias, and Anhanias. Annanias survived many battles with the New Jersey, fifth infantry, Company B. The NJ, Company B were renown for their courage and persistence in battle.
According to records, Annanias was injured in Chancellorsville. He later was killed in action July 3, 1863 during the battle at Gettysburg, in the Wheatfield. Amazingly, recent research reveals that Annanias was one of the Union soldiers who's corpse is depicted in one of the most iconographic photographs of the Civil war. Sadly, he is one of the soldiers in Timothy H. O'Sullivan photo titled: 'the Harvest of Death'. source: http://www.gdg.org/gettysburg%20magazine/coates.html
He was later buried as an 'unknown' soldier the Soldiers National Cemetery, where President Lincoln gave his famous speech called 'the Gettysburg Address'.

Patrick Larkins
- Corporal
Hi, My GGGrandfather, Patrick Larkins, was a corporal in the 5th NJ Inf. Have a photo of him in uniform and a copy of a book by Alfred Ballard(sp), ''Gone to a Solider'' which gives an account of the activities and battles of the 5th as seen by average soldier. MY GGGF is mentioned in the book. Would like to hear from other family members of vets. I am also a militaria collector and am always looking for articles related to the 5th NJ or the 77th Division(WWI-WWII). Hope to hear from someone. Peace, Mark
